Can I learn Korean alone?

learning korean Oct 13, 2022

Self-teaching yourself anything is absolutely possible - guitar, coding, baking a cake.

You literally have infinite resources at your fingertips on the weird and wonderful place we call the internet.

Learning a language is not much different in that sense.

Add in online courses and textbooks and there is absolutely no reason why you wouldn't be able to teach yourself Korean. When there's a will, there's a way right?!

How to teach yourself Korean: A Tutorial

  1. Find the right textbook/workbook that fits your level and learning style
  2. Find some online courses or subscribe Youtubers that will explain the details to you
  3. Set a study schedule and stick to consistently
  4. LEARN

Many people are indeed, very successful in doing this.

Just... not me.

Why this doesn't work for people like me.

There are just too many rabbit holes to fall down and get lost in.

You're super pumped to get started and you get a whole bunch of textbooks and subscribe to Youtubers.

Oh and don't forget to buy a spanky new stationary set because you just know THIS TIME, you're going to master it.

But then motivation falters and you get a bit confused and overwhelmed at how much information there is and oh my god, where do I start..! Wait am I even doing this right..? I still have such a long way to go, I've barely scratched the surface! Oh life isn't THAT bad without knowing this anyway… is this worth my energy?

Might as well give up now.

Sound familiar?

I've tried self-teaching myself a whole bunch of things before (thanks lockdown 2021).

Consciously or otherwise, we've all been through this thought process before. And it's not always because you're unmotivated or not trying hard enough.

(That's a question you need to answer to yourself honestly)

A lot of the time it's because you're simply overwhelmed and confused which often CAUSES demotivation.

A human-teacher is a professional, and more importantly, a professional in TEACHING that topic.

They will help you achieve a whole bunch of things that you can't do alone.

A really great teacher will:

  • Keep you accountable and giving you a kick up the bum when you need it
  • Correct you when you're wrong, which is especially important with pronunciation practice
  • Give you certainty when you are right and build your confidence
  • Structure your learning so you know what to focus on and take it step-by-step
  • Support and encourage you when the going gets tough
  • Save you time and effort of looking for answers and explanations in different places
  • Challenge and push you so you continue to improve and not plateau in your learning

Can you learn Korean on your own? Absolutely and inarguably - YES!!

Does it work? Also a YES!

Is it easier? No.

Is it more effective? Definitely no.

Tutors can either be too expensive or low quality of teaching.

Group classes are a great alternative with the best of both worlds!

Plus you have the added social benefits and make some new friends along the way.
